Since the late 1970s, political leaderships in the Arab world have been remarkably stable; although leaders have relied on their militaries to retain power, coups have become virtually non-existent. This paper analyzes the methods that leaders use to ‘control’ their militaries, and highlights the price paid in conventional capabilities.
