In July 1660, Samuel Pepys was appointed Clerk of the Acts to the Naval Board, and went on to become an MP and Chief Secretary to the Admiralty. His diary, which he kept for nearly ten years, is a vivid account of some of seventeenth-century England’s most significant events.
